Filming Update

I have now finished my filming and editing, I feel that it has gone well and that I have got some good shots in my film, I have also reflected what the artist is saying in her song into my music video. Although I would have liked to have more shots of the main artist Agnesa so my music video would be promoting her more. I would include more of link between my artist and the couple so it was easier to understand and relate too.

Filming Updates

I have filmed the artist at the train station which went well  the weather was good and the bright blue sky had an great effect on my shots as they looked bright and professional. I have also filmed my shots of the couple I shot it in my house as I needed the light due to that the people I was filming could only be filmed in the evening. But I made some errors in my shots, firstly as the shots of the couple where meant to be flashbacks having the scenes shot in the same house made did not give the flashback effect I needed. I also made another crucial error and did not think about the mise en scene and kept the actors in the same outfit for each shot which also made i look like it was not a flashback. Therefore I am going to have to film some more shots of the couple different locations and different outfits.

Target Audience/Brand Image

Prop/Styling List

I  have hold my actress who was going to play the artist to wear on trend clothes, some jewelry which is what most R&B artists like to wear however I am going to challenge the convention of them wearing heavy makeup and wearing limited amount of clothes so I told my actress to wear light makeup to make her look naturally beautiful and not wear provocative clothes as I wanted to give the girl next door look, but also make sure she looked glamorous.I have told my other actors to wear on-trend clothes, and also ones that do not stand out as much as I mainly want to promote the main artists style but then I also want them to look stylish. I do not really need any other props, other than the flowers that the boy is going to give the girl. I also need to make sure I have a car I can use to get me to the different locations and to use in my shots.

Filming Schedule

Actresses/Actors:
Agnesa, Shannon and Mitchell

Dates: 14/11/13 and 18/11/13

Locations: Train Station and My house

On the 14/11/13 at 12:00 I will film Agnesa singing the song at the train station I will be able to film until 2:15 giving me enough time to be able to film and to solve any problems if they occur. It will also be light outside so the shots will be clearer and the film will look better quality.

On the 18/11/13 at 4:30 I will film Shannon and Mitchell's shots of being a couple together, I have no time  that I have to be done by therefore I will enough time to film and sort out any problems if they occur this time also. I could not film it in the day time as Mitchell works till 4 in the week and Shannon works on the weekends till late therefore 4:30 is the only time they could do. This is not a problem for me as all the shots they are included in are inside so I can use the lights in my house to make sure the shots are clear.

Risk Assessment

1st Location: Train Station
Possible risks: Falling into the track, falling down the stairs, falling over.
Avoidance strategies: Keep away from the edge, walk carefully down the stairs, be careful whilst walking.

2nd Location: House
Possible risks: Shot of throwing glass could hit person or smash back at person, in kitchen be careful of knifes and oven, when play fighting or pretending to fight hurting yourself.
Avoidance strategies: Be extra careful when throwing the glass, act sensible when in kitchen, don't hit hardly.

Artist Image/ Target Audience Profile

My artists image is going to be fashionable and wearing clothes that are in style at this current time. But it is also going to compliment the typical R&B image, such things as gold jewellery.
My artist will wear makeup but not a lot as I want to show she is naturally pretty. My video will contain lots of shots of the artist as I want it to promote her therefore she will need to look good as I want it to appeal to the male gaze.
The target audience is young adults, therefore the character will need a young style so they can relate to the artist. The artist does not have a particular style such as goth, hipster or Essex she will just have an on-trend style, she will have the girl next door look. She will be appealing to a niche audience, young teenage girls.

Location

I am going to use several locations, the first one is High Barnet train station, I chose this as I wanted to use it as a metaphor for the song as a train station could be seen as leaving or running away and that was what my song was about. I chose High Barnet station as it is close to where I live so easily accessible.

I am going to be using my house as well to show the relationship when there behind closed doors so the audience feels like they know about the relationship more. And my house is going be very accessible for me. I also have chosen to use a supermarket and flower shop to show the relationship doing everyday things and out in public, I chose the flower shop in Barnet as I think it looks more romantic than most. I chose Sainsburys in New Barnet as it is close and very big so I have space to film and get in the way of customer.
I am going to use areas of the Barnet high street to make my video look more urban and modern. I am going to use High Barnet also because its close and I think right now it looks quite romantic because of the Christmas decorations.

Story Board

Monday, 11 November 2013

Genre Research - R&B

- Minimal clothing  target markets young teenage girls and male gaze
- Connotes a sense of sexuality

- Majority of the videos are filmed in grey scale/sepia tone which adds imagery in the video

- Showing off wealth through mise en scene for example jewellery and clothing

- Focused on physical looks of artist or extras
-A 'typical' R&B video often consists in some part miming to the camera, either performance based or telling a story in the video.
-Some sort of dancing, ranging from break dancing to hip-hop, to make known the artists ability as a dancer. Which leads onto alot of these videos being set in a nightclub or some sort of party atmosphere.

Ideas For My Music Video

The song i am using is about a couple breaking up and the women in the relationship has decided to leave as she feels it is the best thing to do.
In my music video i am going to use flashbacks of a couple together having happy and sad times, showing how much they loved each other but also showing the bad times causing the women to leave.
I will then have someone acting as the artist who will lip sync in the song and with lots of close ups which will promote my artist and have performance based shots. The shots of the couple will give the video a story line and will also give my video a narrative base.
I will use lots of different settings for my video as they will be mainly flash backs which will all be in different places. But the performance based side of the video i will not use as much variety of the settings, as then it will seem like the artist is being the narrator for the story and telling the story. Also the setting won't draw much attention to itself and i want the main focus to be on the artist and promote her.

Lyrics

I don’t want to be one who has to cut these ties every other way I have tried
and don’t want to be the one who has to walk away but it’s too late
, it’s too late, it’s too late too many mistakes
CHORUS: baby I can’t be the one to stay breaking every day oh boy that’s why I’m leaving and baby I can’t be the one to leave and if I have to choose me and my boy were leaving
I don’t want to be the one to have to tell our child daddy’s gone away for a while and I don’t want to be the one to wipe tears from his face no not me not this way, disgrace, disgrace, too many mistakes
CHORUS
I can’t be the one to save you and I can’t be the one to take you there
CHORUS

Three Different Music Video Types

There are 3 main types of music video which are performance, narrative and conceptual.

Performance based videos shows only the artist performing the song and showing them off as a brand. They have lots of close ups of the artist and also uses a lot of lip syncing. This type of music video is the cheapest type of video to make. One example of a performance based video is Miley Cryus's video wrecking ball where it has lots of close ups with her and every shot includes her.

Narrative based videos includes mostly footage that shows and story line and runs through out. or sometimes several story lines that run parallel to each other. They sometimes use actors or the artists in the story and the story usually links to the lyrics of the song or the theme of the song. One example is Ed Sheeran's song The A Team.
Conceptual videos are based around a single concept or idea, these videos are much harder to make and more expensive to make as they can use special FX. They are also not as popular as they are harder to relate to so not many artists use this type of video. One example is DJ Shadow and James Lavelle Rabbit in your headlights.

Goodwin beleives there are 5 features that are used in music videos, they are: 1.Thought beats - seeing the sound, a relationship between visuals and lyrics 2. Narrative and performance - relationship between the music and the visuals 3. The star image - music genres having there own music video style 4. Relation of visuals to song - demand of record company for lots of close-ups on the main artist 5. Techinal aspects of music video - references to either other music videos or to films or TV texts

Music Video Timeline

In the 50's musical films became very popular and everyone realised that putting images with a song made the songs more popular, and some used the scene in the film where there music was playing and used it as there music video such as Madonna's 1985 video for material girl.

In the 60's the Beatles starred in a musical film and they used the scenes from the film for music videos this made them much more popular. Also for Elvis Presley who started making videos to create a fan base for his music.

In the 70's the programme top of the pops was launched which only showed the best videos as they had a limit on how many they could show. This then made the songs more popular and increased sales as the viewers wanted to see the same song the next week.

In the 80's the U.S show MTV was launched and beginning an era of 24-hour-a-day music on television. With this new outlet for material, the music video would play a central role in popular music sales. Many important acts of this period, most notably Adam and the AntsDuran Duran and Madonna

In the 90's MTV began to list the directors for the videos in the credits of the music video which caused the auteur's medium Directors such as Chris CunninghamMichel GondrySpike JonzeFloria Sigismondi,Stéphane SednaouiMark Romanek and Hype Williams.

In the 00's the internet became video friendly and such websites as youtube, google, Facebook, yahoo and myspace plays music videos which you could access easily and for free. This then made music videos more popular. The band OK Go achieved fame through the videos for two of their songs, "A Million Ways" in 2005 and "Here It Goes Again" in 2006, both of which first became well-known online.

The Auteur Theory

The auteur theory is when the director uses a signature style with every production he directs. The director brings something personal and unique to their video. The auteur theory was introduced in the 1950's by french film directors. One example is Chris Cunningham who has adds a unique style to his music videos he uses dark colours such as blues, blacks and greys. He also conveys a dark message in his music videos, quite a horror genre.

Hype Williams is a music video director, you can see that the he has his own style for example Kanye West 'gold digger', Beyonce 'check up on it'. He uses coloured banners, the use of bold primary colours there is also a lot of sexualisation of women through dance and costume. He also uses a lot of shots of the artists singing/rapping into the camera which are close ups, he uses fish eye lens in his videos also. Williams also seems to focus on one type of genre of music which is R&B and hip hop, he has become much more known recently and puts his name on each of his videos as he will be recognised.

Finding my song

Over the summer I had to look for music to use in my music video. I looked on youtube for unsigned artists but could only really find covers of songs and not original songs, also no genres that i particularly liked. I then looked on mp3.com which has unsigned artists singing their songs and you can email them asking to use their songs, the website had artists for lots of different genres I wanted drum and bass but it did not include a lot of lyrics therefore it would be hard to make a video for it. I emailed a couple of people asking if I could use their songs but was unsuccessful. I also asked people that I knew if they knew any unsigned artists and If could use their song. My friend Tamara knew someone that had good music, could sing well with also his own song and knew that he would allow me to use his music for my video. His type music is alternative rock and he is in a band which is called black hole sky. I wanted to use this at first but then realized that a band would need to feature in my video and they i didn't know any bands that could. But then I found a girl called Emerald Jones and she said she could use her song for my video.

The process of finding my song was quite challenging as i initially didn't know anyone who sang and had their song, it was also hard to find websites that had unsigned artists with their own songs on it. I also had to ask a lot people if they knew anyone before finding someone that did. I am happy with my song choice as it is not too hard to create a video to go with the song. I also have easy access to good quality version of his song.

Risk Assessment

-Before we filmed, we made sure that the location would be safe, so we went during the day which also benefited our lighting.
-We also made sure that our actress did not have to do any unsafe stuff that would cause her harm in our film.
-We made sure not to disrupt the public whilst filming
-We made sure that our filming equipment would not obstruct the area we was filming in.
-Before we started filming we made sure the camera was safely attached to the tripod and set up correctly so it couldn't harm anyone
around it and we could not harm the camera.

Rat Race

Rat Race's title sequence was very effective as it was very fun to watch and got the audience to pay attention  it also introduced the characters so we knew who they where before the film. It set the genre of it being a comedy  it appeals to young and older people. The music was very effective as it had the name of the film included into it, it also linked in very with was happening. It was very upbeat and also linked into the film. The bright colors draws you're attention  the heads that aren't in proportion to the bodies makes it very comical and child like, it represents the film to be a bit silly and the characters are going to be quite childish.

Why I Chose My Title

We came up with it by researching words to do with our film like 'mental' or 'sadness' and saw if other more striking words came up that would relate to our film but also bring attention to our film. We also did not want to use a film name that had already been used to we used a word that isn't commonly used as others.

My title is called indignation, i called it this as it means righteous anger and displeasure at something unjust. In our film she is angry at the world as she is going through something unjust, so the title fitted in with our film therefore we chose it.

Costume For My Film

We tried to make our character have a unique style so she would stand out, but we also made her look stylish and attractive to appeal to the target audience. We used a fashionable top to make her look like an average girl but with the hooped earrings jean jacket and messed up hair gave her a uniqueness that made her stand out. It also showed how she was different from the rest which compared to her mental condition is different from the rest. We thought that the outfit appealed to the target audience also as we are going for the young adults and that it the sort of fashion they are into.

Title Production/Distribution Company

Vertigo Films:

Vertigo Films is the leading British Independent film production and distribution company.
Since being founded in 2002 by producer Allan Niblo and James Richardson, the company has produced 24 films and distributed a further 30. Vertigo's joint CEO's are also Rupert Preston and Nick Love. Championing new talent has been key to Vertigo Film's production strategy and it continues to pride itself in being at the forefront of breaking in new talent and being a hub of emerging creativity, including Tom Hardy (Bronson), Scoot McNairy (Monsters), Gareth Edwards (Monsters) Tom Green (Monsters 2) Ben Gregor (All Stars) and Nicolas Winding Refn (Bronson). The company finances or co-finances films for a variety of budgets. It is co-owner of Protagonist Pictures, although its films are not exclusive to the company. Vertigo also has a successful post production company in Berlin, The Post Republic.

Casino Royale

This opening I think is very effective, the opening gives you a good idea of what the film is going to be about and gives a good twist of action vs casino.
The animation is effective and gives it a more light hearted feel whilst showing shooting and killing. This may represent that it was a good thing to kill these people and keeps the audience on the main characters side.
The use of using clubs, hearts, diamonds and spades which are all to do with cards shows that it will be about card games and how he uses it to his advantage. The twist of using the casino and the guns makes less graphic and pretty much tells you the sense of the film.
Having the main character featured in the title sequence introduces you to the character and and shows what he is like.
The music used is very effective as it is quite upbeat yet has a dark twist to it. It also fits into the title sequence as it goes along.
